Concept
Balm in Gilead is a 1965 play written by Lanford Wilson. This poster was inspired by the play's characters. The characters dialogued was very chaotic. The gestural tangled contoured faces are made with one continuous line representing how these diverse characters are tangled in their problems, yearning to get out but don’t have the support nor means to do so. This is emerging out of a cup of coffee symbolizing the diner setting. I chose to have a black background against the strong white lines to have a shocking contrast. Also, the electric red adds drama and is used as a tool of foreshadowing of Joes spilled blood. The play ends with all the characters saying their lines from the first scene, implying that they are stuck in a tangled web of hardship.
